Who’s Who?

Who’s Who?

Clergy and Lay Readers:

Revd. Esther Smith

Esther moved to Chilcompton in September 2018 to take up the role of Rector at St Vigor’s & St John’s.
Although she grew up in Yorkshire, her previous parishes were in Bath and she loves living and working in the South West.
She has a passion to see people of all ages get to know Jesus as saviour and friend and discover the gifts God has given them. When not working she likes to potter in the garden or read a good book.

Rtd. Revd. Freda Meadow

Leadership Team Member

Freda moved from Harrow to Somerset in 2010. Although a retired priest, she continues to preach and lead services at St John’s. Prior to retirement, she served in various churches in the Harrow area and was also involved with teaching and training congregations overseas in the area of prayer ministry involving healing and the prophetic. Freda loves to spend time with family, friends and enjoys the great outdoors. Also loves relaxing while reading and writing.

Peter Van Peborgh

Lay Reader

Peter has been a lay minister at St John’s and St Vigor’s for about five years.
He is married to Linda and they have two ‘children’ and five grandchildren who live in Bath and in the USA.
His hobbies include following science and technology, family research and collecting vintage computer items. And trying to make Christian sense of the world.

Kristin Marshall

Lay Reader

Kristin has been a Reader since October 2001 and has been part of the leadership team in this benefice for about five years.
She is now retired but was formerly a physics teacher with a passion for teaching and learning.
Kristin says that she enjoys worshipping at St John’s because she rarely leaves on a Sunday without feeling challenged or touched by God. Outside church, she is interested in the natural world and enjoys reading and various craft activities.

Churchwardens and Secretaries:

Nigel Wood

St Vigor’s Secretary

Nigel grew up in Chilcompton, attending the Sunday School and then worshipping at St. John’s before ‘migrating’ to St. Vigor’s in Stratton-on-the-Fosse – whose village 2nd XI cricket team he played (very badly) for – not long after the current Benefice was formed. He gradually became entwined in the life of St. Vigor’s and has held the position of PCC Secretary since 1992, also doing a stint as Churchwarden. Having long-since retired to the boundary’s edge, frequent visits to the County Ground in Taunton are eagerly anticipated to watch Somerset.

Tony Chivers

St John’s Churchwarden

Tony Chivers has been a member of St John’s for nearly 6 years and one of two Church Wardens for the last 2 years. He has a longing for others to experience the love of God and to have a relationship with His Son Jesus. During his spare time he enjoys gardening and has recently started making walking sticks from hazel wood.

Tom Mayes

St John’s Churchwarden

Originally from Stockport, Tom was a student in Bath before living in South Wales for nine years. Returning to the South West in 2013 to live with his young family in Midsomer Norton he has worshipped at Chilcompton ever since and became a Churchwarden in May 2018. He wants to make sure that everyone drawn to St John’s receives as warm a welcome as he did. Tom can often be found indulging his hobby of bellringing in the church or chasing round after his children.
